How To Find A Good Esthetician

After a rant that I posted on instagram about regulations (or lack of) in the beauty industry got lots of feedback it left the question "how does someone find a good esthetician?". That is what prompted me to make this blog post.

I need to preface that the answer to this question is not cut & dry. There are many nuances to this question but I will provide you with a guideline of how to find a good esthetician.

Presentation

A good esthetician will take care into their presentation. This displays professionalism in the workplace. A good esthetician will generally:

  • dress in a professional manner
  • maintain good hygiene
  • have their hair neatly tied back
  • makeup is natural in appearance
  • nails are short and manicured

There is a purpose behind each point and maybe I can do a more in depth post about that another time but for now know that an esthetician that presents themselves in this way is a good sign.

Qualified

A good esthetician will have gone through the required certification to legally work in their province/state and taken continuing education to stay up to date in the industry as well as improve their knowledge. Look for a certificate of qualification in the estheticians workspace or ask them for their credentials.

Understands Skin/Nails

To continue off of the previous point, a good esthetician has an understanding of the skin/nails in order to make informed decisions when it comes to providing treatments.

Tact

A good esthetician will speak in a manner that is respectful and uses tact. This displays professionalism.

Respects Privacy

A good esthetician is aware and respectful of your privacy and is diligent to ensure your privacy is protected. For example, they will be mindful not to expose you as they are draping or undraping a section.

Graceful Touch

In my opinion, a good esthetician does not use rough or choppy actions but rather uses movements that are graceful and fluid to enhance your relaxation.

This list is definitely not everything that makes up a good esthetician but a good esthetician will have these qualities.
