I'm sure by now you have heard of the term double cleansing. Double cleansing has been a staple for decades among professionals and skincare enthusiasts and is becoming increasingly popular among the general population, for good reason!
But in case you don't know what it is, double cleansing is the process of purposefully cleansing your skin twice. Typically the first cleanse is with an oil or balm cleanser and the second cleanse is with your normal cleanser of choice. This process is done as the first step in your evening skincare routine.
What is the point of double cleansing?
A really great way to think of double cleansing is to think of sweeping before you mop. You need to clean up dirt and debris first so that you're not smearing dirt around when you mop.
The same goes for cleansing. The first cleanse uses an oil or balm to lift off and remove any dirt, debris, sunscreen, makeup, etc. from the skin so that your second cleanse can clean your skin itself. Otherwise you would just be rubbing around whatever was sitting on your skin but never actually cleaning your skin & pores!
Should you be double cleansing even if you don't wear makeup or sunscreen?
In short, yes.
When I was in New York City this past spring there was something that became really apparent to me. My skin looked and felt dirty by the end of the day. There was actually a coating of dust, dirt and who knows what sitting on my skin! While I realize that not everybody reading this is living in New York City, I want to highlight the fact that debris accumulates on our skin throughout the day, regardless of where you live.
Even if you are not wearing makeup or sunscreen, it is still important for the hygiene of your skin to double cleanse at night.
Who is double cleansing for?
Essentially everyone! I would suggest starting double cleansing as soon as a person is old enough to start a skincare routine. This age varies by a few years but generally around the age of 13.
How do you double cleanse?
This is exactly how to double cleanse using my favourite cleansing duo, Epicutis Oil Cleanser & iS Clinical Cleansing Complex:
Pump 2-4 pumps of Epicutis Oil Cleanser onto clean dry hands then massage onto dry face for a few minutes. For best results massage thoroughly in every nook and fold of the face. Next, wet your hands and massage the cleanser around again. Keep grabbing more water as needed. This will create a milky effect that lifts off makeup, sunscreen and anything that was sitting on your skin. Remove with a clean damp towel.
Grab a dime size amount of iS Clinical Cleansing Complex with a few drops of water and emulsify (rub the product) in your hands before spreading onto the face. Massage around the face and neck for approximately 2 minutes, grabbing more water as needed. Rinse the cleanser off with lukewarm water and pat dry your skin with a clean side of the towel.
That is how you properly double cleanse!
Double cleansing is one of my favourite topics to talk about because it is not only essential for good skin, it will greatly improve the skin! I have so much I could say about how double cleansing will improve the skin but I will save that for another blog post!
The bottom line is that double cleansing is essential in every skincare routine. Making the change to double cleansing with quality products like Epicutis Oil Cleanser and iS Clinical Cleansing Complex are sure to improve your skin!
